Kristopher Roe has run The Ataris through a lot of lineups, and the one that made So Long, Astoria for Columbia is the one people remember. Billboard put the album's sales past 693,000 copies by 2013, when Roe reunited guitarist John Collura, bassist Mike Davenport and drummer Chris Knapp to play it in full for its 10th anniversary; its cover of Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer" had peaked at No. 20 on the Hot 100. That classic lineup didn't last, but Roe kept going. "Car Song," released in May 2025, was the first single from the band's first album since 2007, a record he told chorus.fm was partly built from songs going back to the Blue Skies era that he had never recorded.
