'Whiplash' gave aespa their first real global chart moment — the title track off their 2024 EP hit No. 8 on the Billboard Global 200, the group's first top-10 there, four years after SM Entertainment debuted them with a concept most K-pop groups wouldn't have attempted: each member paired with a virtual avatar, or 'ae,' living in a parallel digital world called Kwangya that the group has spent years building out across music videos and lore.
It could have played as a gimmick. Instead it became the thing that set them apart in an oversaturated fourth-generation K-pop field — Rookie of the Year sweeps in their first year, then Armageddon, their 2024 album, selling over a million copies in its opening week. The metaverse concept turned out to be load-bearing, not decorative.
