The Chainsmokers started in 2012 doing remixes of other people's indie songs, which makes '#Selfie' blowing up two years later look almost like an accident — Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall weren't building toward pop stardom so much as stumbling into it. 'Closer,' the Halsey collaboration that came next in 2016, is still one of the most-streamed songs ever recorded, and it set off a run of diamond and gold certifications that lasted through 2019's World War Joy.
They've kept working steadily since without another Closer-sized moment — a Las Vegas residency, a string of albums and EPs through 2026's Love Is Kind, and, this year, a writing credit alongside Ilsey on John Summit's 'All the Time,' putting two generations of festival-EDM crossover acts on the same track.
