Boundaries come out of the Hartford area of Connecticut, and for most of their first decade they worked metalcore's underground the slow way. An early release was even called Hartford County Misery. The records that built their name came in a steady two-year rhythm: Your Receding Warmth in 2020, Burying Brightness in 2022 and Death Is Little More in 2024, with vocalist Matthew McDougal's harsh delivery at the center of all three.

Sumerian Records announced them as a new signing in March 2026, alongside the single "Skies cast amber black," and their fourth album, Yearning: The unbeautiful after, followed on July 17. "Death will follow me" and "Only endless" came out ahead of it, and "Torn wide open" brings in Australia's Make Them Suffer. McDougal's reach goes past his own band, too. He guests on "Looking Glass" by Spite, who play Sonic Temple on Thursday.
