Ecca Vandal's family left South Africa as Sri Lankan Tamil refugees when she was a child, settling in Melbourne, where she grew up on gospel before discovering soul, hip-hop, and 90s R&B in her older sister's record collection.

She studied jazz formally at the Victorian College of the Arts before building a punk-informed solo sound that owes as much to that record collection as to any conservatory training.

Her 2017 self-titled debut album brought in guests like Sampa the Great and Refused's Dennis Lyxzén, and she's toured alongside Queens of the Stone Age, Idles, and The Prodigy since — Looking for People to Unfollow, her 2026 second album, keeps pushing the fusion of punk, hip-hop, and soul further rather than settling into one lane.
