Calder Allen wanted to be a fly fisherman, not a musician, despite being raised in a family that includes Terry Allen, one of Texas's defining songwriters, and Jo Harvey Allen, a playwright and actress who's appeared in The Client and Killers of the Flower Moon.
Childhood holidays were spent at his grandfather's house while touring singer-songwriters passed through — proximity to the craft for years before he had any interest in it himself.
The family history eventually pulled him in anyway, and Fault Lines, his debut LP, is the result — a 19-year-old Austin native carrying serious inherited expectations while trying to build something that's recognizably his rather than an extension of his grandfather's catalog.
