Cameron Whitcomb was working on the Trans Mountain pipeline in Kamloops, having never sung in public once, when he decided to audition for American Idol at 18 — he made the Top 20 on that alone, which is not the normal path into a recording contract. Atlantic Records signed him shortly after.
