Walker & Royce met in 2005 as interns at a New York music distribution company, years before either of them made a track together — the actual partnership didn't start until Gavin called Sam in for help on something he was working on, and the two didn't formally become a duo until 2011.

Crosstown Rebels' Damian Lazarus discovered one of their earliest remixes and put out their debut EP; “Connected,” released around the same time on OFF Recordings, became enough of a Solomun-set staple to count as a real breakthrough. Self Help, their 2017 debut album on Dirtybird, formalized the sound, and Rules Don't Apply Records, the label they launched in 2022, gave them a home for everything since.
