At a Blood Orange show, Dev Hynes doesn't stand still behind a mic — he moves through guitar, piano, bass, and cello within the same song, cueing the rest of his band as he goes, playing the part of composer and bandleader simultaneously rather than delegating either job. It shouldn't read as intimate, given how much is happening on stage at once, but by most accounts it does; he's said performing feels almost uncomfortably personal, and that he's had to treat live shows as a separate process from writing the songs just to get through them.
He didn't start here. Test Icicles, a teenage dance-punk band, put out one album in 2005 before Hynes moved on to the folkier Lightspeed Champion project, and only launched Blood Orange — the R&B-and-electronics project he's known for now — with 2011's Coastal Grooves. Essex Honey, his fifth Blood Orange album, came out in 2025 with features from Lorde, Caroline Polachek, and Turnstile's Brendan Yates.
He's also spent years as one of pop's more reliable ghostwriters — Solange's 'Losing You,' guitar and production work on Carly Rae Jepsen's E•MO•TION, credits with Tinashe and Kylie Minogue — a parallel career that rarely gets mentioned in the same breath as his own albums, even though it's arguably just as consistent.
